Winners of the Vicksburg Blues Challenge 2016 - BAND Division

KEITH JOHNSON is a 23-year-old Mississippi guitar player, songwriter and vocalist.  He writes exceptional lyrics that tell Mississippi stories, and sings with remarkable rawness and grit.  A descendant of a long line of Blues singers, he is very proud of his Delta roots. He brings big talent and an authentic Blues pedigree to the stage. Known as “The Prince of the Delta Blues”, Keith is the grand-nephew of Muddy Waters. He lives in Cleveland, Mississippi and is a recent graduate of Delta State University, where he continues his studies in music.  Growing up with Blues and Gospel as an integral part of his life, Keith and his band have played Blues venues and churches for several years.  Music is his life and in his blood and he’s dedicated to making the Blues his career.  Keith won first place in the Vicksburg Blues Challenge 2016, and advanced to represent VBS in the International Blues Challenge (IBC) 2017.  Keith and his band Big Muddy performed at the Club 152 on Beale Street in the IBC Quarter-Finals.  He is managed by Twice as Nice Entertainment.

Winner of the Vicksburg Blues Challenge 2016 - SOLO/DUO Division

SAM JOYNER, raised on Chicago Blues, is internationally known for his fusion of Blues, R&B, and Jazz styling.  Performing solo keyboards/vocals and with his band and other prominent groups in the region keeps him on the move. His original music is a combination of Delta Swamp Blues, Chicago Urban Blues, and New Orleans Blues. Joyner has toured the Pacific Islands and Asia, and helped establish the Micronesian Blues Society where Blues continues to thrive.  Sam's musical journey advanced when he won the Vicksburg Blues Challenge 2016, winning him the opportunity to compete in the International Blues Challenge (IBC) 2017. Performing "The Gig of a Lifetime", Sam performed before thousands of international fans in the IBC Quarter-Finals and the Semi-Finals, and advancing to compete in the IBC Finals at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.  In a field of hundreds of Blues musicians from around the globe, he made us proud by placing in the top eight.  You can find Sam performing at Spirits on Bourbon in New Orleans, at the iconic Teddy’s Juke Joint in Zachary, Louisiana, and in Vicksburg at The BIG MUDDY Restaurant and Bar.
